Project Aim
To strengthen intergenerational and family bonds, preserve indigenous food knowledge and promote literacy and holistic wellbeing by bringing grandmothers and children together to prepare meals, share stories and engage in intergenerational learning.
What is Sipheka noGOGO?
Sipheka noGOGO is a intergenerational cooking programme where families gather to cook, read, share stories, and rebuild cultural and familial bonds.
Activities centre around:
Nutritious meal preparation using traditional recipes
Storytelling and cultural knowledge sharing
Budgeting, kitchen safety, and food hygiene
Strengthening children’s sense of identity, belonging, and connection
Promoting conversation and emotional literacy in families
What is offered….
4-hour hosted cooking sessions followed by a shared meal and reading/storytelling
Storybooks from Masifunde GOGO Library
Indigenous recipe booklets
Conversation prompts to facilitate family bonding
Recognition for participating grandmother (meal hosting, storytelling)
Safe, central venues (homes, halls, community centres)
Transport support for participating grandmothers and children

Project Dates
The pilot project began in July 2025 and will be complete in June 2026. Funding is being sourced for scale up to other areas.
