GOGOBox
Project Aim
Backed by extensive research, GOGObox launched to help grandparents enhance their physical and mental health in a fun and safe environment created just for them. The initiative aims to foster friendships and community among older persons, and confidence within themselves – while promoting habits to improve their quality of life, and keep them moving
What is GOGOBox?
This programme offers weekly boxing classes at Slow Poison Gym in Morningside for groups of gogos and mkhulus from Alexandra. Equipped with punching bags, free weights and cardio equipment, the gogos have all the tools and space to work up a good sweat – and have fun doing it. After an hour of getting into fighting shape, it’s time to cool down with tea, treats and a table reserved just for them at a nearby restaurant, Club Como.
“We train hard!” says boxing coach, Lu. “Today we did interval sprints, pushups and boxing drills on the heavy bags. We stretched before and after to protect and prepare our bodies for the intensity. Now, the gogos are off to enjoy tea and brunch at the cafe.”
Box, breathe, then brunch – a typical Friday morning for the gogos and mkhulus of the GOGObox programme.
